What’s The Importance of Grass-Fed?
You know the saying“you are what you eat?” This is a true statement in the sense that if you consume healthy, nutritious things your body will feel the benefits. When consuming products that are animal sourced it is important that those animals are also fed a healthy and nutrient dense diet that is natural to them.
When an animal is free to naturally graze in fields and feed on grasses it is considered“Grass-Fed.” The alternative to“grass-fed” is grain fed with grain usually made from a base of soy or corn. Grain encourages the animals to grow much faster than normal and has very little nutrient value, where natural grasses are high in essential vitamins and fatty acids. Where beef is mass produced, such as in the US, cattle are usually grain-fed. However, grass-fed beef is common in many other countries. Studies on milk and beef products have shown that grass-fed sourced are considerably more nutrient dense than grain fed.
Grazing in fields of grass is also more humane and less stressful on the animal compared to crowed feed lots where they are kept in confinement stalls that are often unsanitary. It is also easier for animals to digest grasses and better for their immune systems.
Animals in feed lots commonly receive hormones also to speed their growth and antibiotics to fight diseases they may contract from the close quarters and grain itself. Studies have shown that disease like e.coli are more prevalent in animals that are grain fed. If you are to consume a product that is from a grain fed feeding lot, you may also consume traces of these chemical elements yourself.
